Centro Shalom

Serving the community since 1977

Centro Shalom

Welcome! Centro Shalom provides pathways to health and self-sufficiency to the underserved and impoverished of greater Long Beach and the surrounding communities through core services and multi-level assistance.

Our name translates to or core philosophy: "peace without boundaries." Since its founding in 1977, Centro Shalom has served hundreds of thousands of clients seeking assistance with community advocacy, legal aid, housing, food, clothing, and other basic needs.  Centro Shalom provides support services for new immigrants, the homeless and poor, serves a completely multicultural, multi-ethnic community, free of charge.

Centro has functioned for more than three decades with minimal paid staff and a vast network of volunteers, some of whom have been with Centro for over a decade.  Centro is a 501(c)3 organization under the South Coast Interfaith Council.

Centro Shalom's service population reflects our philosophy that "peace has no boundaries." To that end, our client base not only includes all of Long Beach, but also extends to Compton, San Pedro, Wilmington, Los Angeles, Hawaiian Gardens, and Lakewood. In December 2013 alone, Centro Shalom assisted approximately 1,246 individuals and families with legal aid, canned and perishable food, citizenship classes, and free clothing. Compared to the 911 clients from November 2013, Centro Shalom has seen a 37% increase in foot traffic within one month. Each week, we have an average of 215 clients who enter our doors for help. Last year's Thanksgiving Basket Drive allowed 518 families to have a basic meal for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
